Joshua led the nation of Israel across the Jordan River into the Promise Land. The people were told the spoils of the battle of Jericho were the Lords and no one was to take anything for themselves. Achan desired what he saw in the city following the walls of Jercho falling down.
"When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath." [Joshua 7:21 (NIV)]
After Israel lost the battle of Ai, Joshua had all the families of Israel pass by him and the lot fell on Achan's family. Achan then repented his evil act quoted above. His judgment was death. You may read the whole story is Joshua chapters 6 and 7.
What can we take away from this event? When God commands a nation to act in a certain way, the nation must or pay the penalty. The United States, which was dedicated unto God at its founding by President George Washington, has in our generation broken God's law. We as a nation thru the action of our Supreme Court have accepted abortion and same-sex marriage as the law of the land, and have put God's Word out of the public domain. Prayer is not allowed in many public places.
Are we ready to pay the judgment? If the nation does not correct their behavior, and repent; we shall be punished as a nation. If we, individually, repent and do what we can to correct the problem we will receive God's mercy.
